Do you need a rental car in La Fortuna?
Updated October 25, 2026 · 6 min read
For a short stay built around organised tours, you do not need a rental car in La Fortuna. For three or more days with independent visits around Arenal, a car is usually the more practical choice. Central La Fortuna is walkable for restaurants, shops and the bus terminal, but the volcano, hanging bridges, hot springs and many trailheads are spread outside town. Compare the total cost of a vehicle with the transfers already included in your tours, not with walking alone.

When you can comfortably skip the car
Stay in town and choose hotel pickup for the major excursions. Whether a tour includes hotel pickup is stated on its booking page; if it does, a hired vehicle may sit unused while you are already paying for transport. This works especially well for a two-night visit, a solo traveller who does not enjoy unfamiliar roads, or a couple planning one full-day tour and one easy day in town.
Public transport exists, but it is not a door-to-door sightseeing network. According to Costa Rica’s tourism authority, a bus leaves the La Fortuna terminal at 8:00 am towards the volcano and returns at 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm. It stops on the main road, leaving about 2 km on foot to the national-park entrance; the park lies roughly 16 km north-west of the town centre and is open daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Confirm times locally rather than build a tight prepaid itinerary around them. Taxis and shuttles fill gaps, but several separate returns can erase the saving from not hiring a car.
When a car earns its place
A car becomes useful when you want an early park entry, a different hot spring in the evening and an unhurried stop on the way back. It also helps families carrying extra layers and day bags, and travellers staying outside central La Fortuna. The value is flexibility: you are not forced to turn every attraction into a guided excursion.
It does not make every day easier. The driver still has to navigate rain, changing road surfaces and dark rural stretches. A booking class marked “SUV” is not permission to use every road; the rental agreement decides which surfaces are allowed. Ask your accommodation and the attraction about the current approach, then match the vehicle to that route.
Compare the whole bill
Look beyond the headline daily rate. Check the mandatory cover shown in the final price, the excess, deposit, fuel policy, additional-driver charge and collection location. Airport pickup can also differ from collecting in La Fortuna.
For a no-car plan, add each shuttle, taxi and tour surcharge for your actual party. Four seats in one car can change the calculation, but parking, fuel and unused rental days push it back the other way. No universal number settles this because dates, driver age and cover alter the quote.
The clear answer
Skip the car for two nights if your hotel is central and your headline activities include pickup. Hire one for a longer independent stay, particularly when accommodation or attractions lie around the lake and volcano rather than in town. Compare the final payable rental terms first, and reserve guided transport for any day when nobody wants responsibility for the road.
