La Fortuna car hire: what do excess, deposit and counter charges mean?
Updated October 25, 2026 · 6 min read
Compare the final payable price, not the cheapest search tile. Before booking a car for La Fortuna, open the rental conditions and identify five separate items: included cover, optional protection, excess, deposit and counter charges. If any amount or accepted card type is unclear, ask the supplier in writing. The correct figure belongs to your specific vehicle, driver and dates; a generic Costa Rica number can be dangerously wrong.

Cover and excess are not the same thing
CDW limits liability for certain damage under stated conditions; it does not automatically mean every scratch, tyre, window, underside or recovery cost is covered. The excess is the amount for which the renter can remain liable when an eligible claim is made. A package may reduce that excess, while exclusions still remain. Read the exclusions and reporting duties instead of treating “full protection” as a promise that nothing can be charged.
Costa Rica has insurance requirements, but that fact does not reveal what your displayed online price includes. Suppliers and brokers can present required and optional products differently. Ask for a line-by-line final quote if the booking page does not clearly show which cover is payable at collection. A card benefit is a separate contract; only its issuer can confirm eligibility, and the rental desk decides what evidence it accepts.
What the deposit does
The deposit is normally an authorisation held on an accepted payment card, not the same as the rental price and not the same as the excess. It reduces the card’s available credit during the hire. The release can take time after return, depending on the supplier and card issuer.
Check whose name must be on the card, whether debit cards are accepted, and the required available limit. “Card accepted for payment” does not necessarily mean “card accepted for the security deposit”. Bring the physical documents named in the conditions; a photograph of a licence or a virtual card may not satisfy the desk.
Charges that appear at collection
Common variables include an additional driver, young-driver rules, one-way return, out-of-hours service, child seats and upgrades. Fuel wording matters too: “full to full” means returning the car at the agreed level, not receiving free fuel. Photograph the gauge and existing damage at pickup and return, and keep the final inspection record.
Road restrictions deserve special attention around La Fortuna. Do not infer from the vehicle’s height or four-wheel drive that gravel, water crossings or poorly surfaced access roads are permitted. If an accommodation or excursion suggests a particular route, compare that advice with the contract. Written permission is more useful than reassurance at a hotel desk.
A five-minute counter check
Before signing, match the agreement to the reservation: vehicle class, rental period, included cover, excess, deposit, fuel policy, drivers and return location. Query every new line before the card is processed. Decline or accept an optional product deliberately; do not sign first and try to decode it in the car park.
The best booking is the one whose worst-case obligations you understand, even when another tile advertises a lower daily rate. Use the comparison page to shortlist cars, then choose only after reading the supplier-specific conditions.
